This unit explores aspects of Muslim festivals, celebrations, pratices and communities and the beliefs to which they relate.

Essential information about this unit

 PROGRAMME OF STUDY LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Pupils should be given the opportunity to:

a) learn about shared beliefs and interests people may have when they belong to a Muslim group or community;
b) learn about some of the practices associated with belonging to a Muslim group or community;
c) learn about forms of personal Muslim response to belief, e.g. prayer, meditation, contemplation;
d) learn about a variety of Muslim festivals and celebrations;
e) consider some of the beliefs and meanings reflected in a variety of Muslim festivals and celebrations.

 

WHERE THIS SAMPLE UNIT FITS IN

This unit is designed for Year 6 – Spring Term. It connects with units 1,4, 7, 10 and 12 in dealing with aspects of human identity and experience, with units 2, 5, 8, 10 and 12 in dealing with questions of meaning and purpose and with units 2, 4, 9, 10 and 12 in dealing with aspects of religious practices and lifestyles.

TIME: This unit is planned for 10 sessions of 1 hour each.

RESOURCES
  • A3 paper for brainstorming various stimuli including newspapers, magazines, yellow pages, local telephone directories etc.
  • Folens books on Islam and Special Times.
  • Card for making posters and membership cards.
  • A range of posters depicting Muslim life, encyclopaedias, artefact box: Qur'an and stand, posters for Qur'an.
  • Visitor. Range of questions already prepared.
  • 3-D models of mosques, pictures of mosques, poster, Imam, visit, plan of a mosque (Folens).
  • www.islam.org will put you on to 'IslamiCity'.
  • 'Imran learns about Ramadan' by Sajde Nazlee (Folens).
  • Topic books, information sheets for the children, card, plastic mendhi pattern stencils, glitter, tinsel, henna, Arabic alphabet, Islam festivals and food book.
  • 'Aspects of Islam' video.
  • Qur'an translation if not already in back of Qur'an, list of quote references from the Qur'an for the children to find.
  • Exploring World Religions CD.

OBJECTIVES FOR LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

B4 Identify main features of the mosque and their significance to the believer and to the community.
B4 Identify the main features of the importance of prayer to a Muslim using the Qur'an.
B5 Identify some of the principal features of Ramadan, compare it to a Christian festival, explain importance to the believer.
