Essential information about this unit

 PROGRAMME OF STUDY LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Pupils should be given the opportunity to:

a) identify places that are special to them or have special associations;
b) identify parts, characteristics and functions of some religious buildings or places and consider the ideas and beliefs connected to them;
c) look at examples within religious buildings of how people have used various forms of expression to convey a message e.g. symbols, paintings, stained glass;
d) share ideas about why particular places may be special to themselves or others.

 

WHERE THIS SAMPLE UNIT FITS IN

This unit is designed for Year 1 - Autumn Term. It connects with units 1 and 4 in dealing with aspects of human identity and experience and with units 3 and 5 in dealing with expressions of belief.

TIME: This unit is planned for 10 sessions of 1 hour.

OBJECTIVES FOR LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

C1 Recognise some symbols/objects used in Christianity. Recall elements of Christian stories as conveyed through forms of religious expression.

C2 Identify and give possible meaning or message underlying examples of Christian expression - crosses, candles, music, stained glass.
D1 Identify aspects of their own experience of places special to them.

D2 Identify places that are special to other people including a Christian church.
