Essential information about this unit

 PROGRAMME OF STUDY LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Pupils should be given the opportunity to:

a. identify some rules or codes of behaviour that people may be guided by;
b. hear and discuss stories from religious traditions with a moral message and stories about the lives of people who have committed themselves to others, particular goals or ways of life;
c. identify values that may be important to themselves and others, eg fairness, honesty, forgiveness, kindness, and think about some of the ways in which these values are demonstrated in everyday life.

 

WHERE THIS SAMPLE UNIT FITS IN

This unit is designed for Year 2 – Summer Term. It connects with units 3 and 9 in dealing with rules and values and with units 1 and 8 in dealing with religious beliefs.

TIME: This unit is planned for 9 sessions of 1 hour each.

RESOURCES
  • ‘Gift to the Child’ - teacher and pupils books (Jonah and Rebecca’s book);
  • card and sticky labels;
  • collection of illustrations from Jonah story;
  • ‘It was Jake!’ by Anita Jeram;
  • Judaism artefact collection - Torah, tallit, kippah, shofar, New Year cards;
  • Bible.

OBJECTIVES FOR LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

A2 Demonstrate factual knowledge of some basic religious beliefs/ideas.
A3 Explain meanings contained in religious stories that might be given by a believer.
F2
Identify what is of value and concern to others, including people with a faith commitment, and suggest reasons for their importance.
F3 Make links between values and commitments, including religious values and commitments, and their own and others’ attitudes and behaviour.
