Somerset Schools Websites |
Somerset County Council has provided a web server for you to host a website for your school. Each school has 25MB of space available, although more can be arranged by discussion.
A simple directory-style listing has been created for each school ('info'), which links to your school's entry in the SiX Schools Directory. The 'website' link will only appear if you have created (and informed us of) your own school website.
Each domain name takes the form of schoolname.somerset.sch.uk, so a school called Hogwarts would have a domain name of hogwarts.somerset.sch.uk. The web pages are published on the Internet by a server with the name www, so the school called Hogwarts would have its web pages published on www.hogwarts.somerset.sch.uk.
Schools do not have to use our server for hosting - webpages can be hosted (and created using online templates) via websites such as www.ik.com and www.digitalbrain.com, or external webspace can be used. Where websites are hosted externally, schools should contact the Authority to arrange appropriate administrative arrangements to allow full access to their website.

Creating Webpages
You can, of course, create your own webpages and upload them to the
server. Although you can write your own webpages using a text editor such as
Notepad or BBEdit, there are also many different software packages to help you
create the pages, like Microsoft FrontPage, Adobe GoLive and Macromedia Dreamweaver.
We recommend that schools who wish to create their own webpages seek advice
on appropriate tools via their local ICT Coordinator meetings. Basic web design
training can be provided by the Curriculum Team (e-Learning & Information Management Group) at a cost.
Uploading Webpages
To publish your
new pages on the Internet, you will need to use an FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
program. We recommend WS
FTP LE as the most simple to use, free software
package to perform this function. Save the file to
your hard disk then run the file you have just saved to
install the software.
To use this FTP software to connect to the Somerset schools server, the following instructions
apply:
Some Important Points
Your homepage, the first
page a visitor will see when they go to your site, must be named default.htm
or default.html (or default.asp if you are coding using
Active Server Pages). If you do not have a homepage named default then an error
page will be displayed when visitors try to connect to your website.
It is always a good idea to keep a separate back-up copy of any webpages you
have created. The FTP program overwrites the files on the server with the files
from the hard disk and if you inadvertently press the wrong button you may overwrite
it in the wrong direction and lose all your hard work!
If you cannot upload new
pages to your website, or are experiencing any difficulties with your webpages,
please contact the ICT Helpdesk on 01823 355090 or by e-mail at icthelp@somerset.gov.uk.
